Commemorative Issue

Planet Earth

Upon the proposition of UNESCO and the "International Union of Geological Sciences", the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 2008 to be the "International Year of Planet Earth" and the three years 2007-2009 to be a period of international actions, with the aim of ensuring for future generations a planet which will offer them safety and welfare, based on the protection and sustainable development of the natural resources.

To achieve this goal, the 400.000 geoscientists from all over the world, have undertaken to transmit to society - political authorities and simple citizens - the scientific knowledge they have accumulated, inform it of the dangers that are threatening our planet and raise everybody's awareness, in order for them to contribute, within the framework of a balanced socioeconomic development, to the protection and sustainability of the environment.

Here is the text of the "International Year of Planet Earth" Resolution adopted by the General Assembly during the 68th plenary meeting.
