Stamp Collecting Month 2010 is focused on wildlife caring, introducing children to the important work that an army of volunteers undertake everyday. The release of this issue coincides with Wildlife Awareness Month, which aims to raise public consciousness of wildlife rescue and rehabilitation.

Australia has no national organisation for responding to wildlife emergencies. But many independent associations have been established nationwide. They are of varying size and sophistication, and typically operate thanks mainly to their dedicated volunteer members. Two of the largest are Wildlife Victoria and, in NSW, WIRES (Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service).

Native animals are injured and orphaned in great numbers by both natural and human-induced trauma, such as sickness, bushfires, oil spills, floods and road accidents. The principles and practice of wildlife caring revolve around three Rs: rescue, rehabilitation and release.
