Greece
Discipline and sensibility, 6 masters of Modern Greek Art

"Parallel to the '30s generation in poetry, a comparable group emerged in painting and with its work dominated the greater part of the 20th century. Thus, next to Seferis, Empirikos and Ritsos, appeared Tsarouchis, Moralis, Ghikas, Diamantopoulos, and Gaitis, equal in force and often in collaboration; Engonopoulos, as both painter and poet, participated consistently in both groups. I insist on this juxtaposition of word and image because I believe they are connected with an umbilical cord and one expression often feeds the other.

More specifically, Tsarouchis signals a type of "national school" with his popular expressionism and Caravaggioesque lovers, Ghikas remains soberly and poetically geometrical, Engonopoulos illustrates surreal openings which allow Alexander the Great to converse with Rigas Feraios, Diamantopoulos with his "workers" or his "sun machines" apologizes, like Sachtouris, for the terror of daily life, Gaitis cleverly assembles "actions" with uniform "little people" in which everyone can identify themselves and finally Moralis, by disciplining emotion elevates the female body to an apotheosis of abstract curved shapes. If we were to add the names of Hadjidakis-Theodorakis, we could easily create the ideal "national team of Greece" in art. Since there is nothing more enduring and more untamable than tenderness..."
