Europa 2003 - Poster is art

Cyprus
The theme of this year's series "Europa" is Poster Art. The poster first appeared towards the end of the 19th century in Paris, which was a centre of technological developments in the fields of lithography. The poster of that era was an expression of the economic, social and cultural life. The Modern movement had a decisive influence on all 2oth century arts, introducing a new mode of expression with main feature the worship of the machine as symbol of poetic expression of the new era, and making the distinction between fine and applied arts more difficult. The designing of the stamp tried to give expression to the above by adopting a constructivist approach.
