Australia's Coral Reefs

Australia is home to stunning coral reefs including the Great Barrier Reef in Queensland and Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia. The stamps in this issue show aerial and underwater images of the two reefs.

Ningaloo Reef is off the coast of the Cape Range peninsula. This park and heritage-listed region is home to the largest fringing coral reef in Australia. Whale sharks are regular visitors arriving for the coral-spawning season.

Great Barrier Reef  

Great Barrier Reef

:

The Great Barrier Reef runs for more than 2,000 kilometres and is the world’s largest coral reef system. It has almost 200 varieties of hard coral and more than 100 types of soft coral. Species found on the reef include minke whales, barracuda and whitetip reef sharks.
